Mattress stains can be major inconveniences because you can’t just throw your mattress in the washing machine like you could a t-shirt. But don’t think you have to throw away a mattress just because of an accident.

This DIY mattress cleaning guide from your Lansing and Kalamazoo cleaning company is here to offer some help with stains like urine, wine, blood, and even puke. Keep reading for stain removal tips, tricks, and things to know.

How to Remove a Urine Stain from a Mattress

Supplies Needed:

  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (8-10 ounces)
  • Spray bottle (2)
  • Cloth (Microfiber)
  • Baking soda (3 tbsp)
  • Dish soap (1 tsp)
  • Vacuum

To start off, you’ll need to create a urine stain’s worst enemy by mixing the hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and baking soda in one of your spray bottles. If you feel a little bit like a scientist that’s because you are one right now!

Although it gets the urine out, you still have to disinfect the area.

This is when your second spray bottle comes in.

First, wait for the area to dry. Then, fill this spray bottle with vinegar and water (50/50 ratio).

This mix is another DIY cleaning mix people have used over the years to disinfect surfaces. The vinegar kills most bacteria, while the water helps dilute the solution so the substance is not overbearing.

If any odors persist, put some baking soda on and around the area. Give it about 15 minutes to sit and work itself into the mattress. Then, use a vacuum to remove it and help your mattress smell a little fresher.

And of course, if the urine stains your battling still won’t yield, feel free to call in the big guns and we’ll make sure to show it who’s boss.

How to Remove a Wine Stain from a Mattress

Supplies Needed:

  • Water
  • Dish Soap
  • Club Soda (nonflavored)
  • Salt
stain removal procedure

Whether party cleaning or recovering from a little spill, when it comes to wine stains you’ll want to act fast.

First, soak up and clean the area as best you can with rags, warm water, and dish soap. If the stain is deep, this step is just a preliminary and you’ll want to bust out the club soda and salt.

Club soda mixed with salt has a special chemical reaction that has been used to help get wine out of just about everything. Start by pouring a generous amount of club soda (nonflavored!) on the area, and then layer it with salt.

This method will require the area to sit and dry for a few hours.

The salt mixed with club soda will actually absorb the wine and pull it out of the mattress. Of course, this method works best when done before the wine stain has dried.

If a stain has dried, there are some other wine stain remedies that have worked in the past but your safest bet is to call the professional mattress cleaners.

How to Remove Blood from a Mattress

Supplies Needed:

  • Corn Starch (½ cup)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (¼ cup)
  • Salt (1 tbsp)
stain removal procedure

Ready to handle one of the most common bed stains like a pro? Mix these three items together to create a special chemical paste used for cleaning up blood.

The paste will be pretty thick, and you’ll want to spread it over the area and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

Afterward, remove the stain by using a wet cloth. We also recommend using cold water. If the paste gives you trouble, you can break it up by using an old toothbrush.

The process may seem tedious, but it can work wonders!

How to Remove Puke from a Mattress

Supplies Needed:

  • Water
  • Soap
  • Old rags
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Vacuum
Remove Puke from a Mattress procedure

Arguably the worst kind of stain, but one of the most common. Whether you have a little one or a horrible stomach bug, puke happens. Here’s how you can get it, and it’s nasty odor out.

First, remove everything you can from the area. Yes, that does mean all those gross chunks. If you have cleaning gloves, now is really the time to wear them. If not, use latex or other protective measures to ensure your safety.

Then, clean the area with soap, water, and an old rag.

DO NOT scrub the area, as this can push particles deeper into your mattress and make it harder to clean. Instead, you’ll want to blot the area until clean.

We recommend using a 50/50 vinegar-water mixture next to try and sanitize the area.

Afterword, lather the spot in baking soda and let it sit for at least 8 hours. Then, snag your vacuum to clean the area up.

Of course, some puke stains are deep in material, whether carpets, chairs, or your mattress and may require professional cleaning. If that’s the case, we’re here to help.
